One Title, Four Jobs The Nuances of the Nursing Field

One Title, Four Jobs The Nuances of the Nursing FieldOne Title, Four Jobs The Nuances of the Nursing FieldThe healthcare industry is a driving force in the U.S. economy, and one of the strongest contributors to the labor market. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts increased growth, saying, The healthcare industry is projected to add more jobsover 4 millionthan any other industry between 2012-2022 And it is projected to be among the fastest growing industries in the economy.Simply Hireds achter monat des jahres 2015 data shows that the growth is mounting more than 14 percent of postings were seeking candidates to fill healthcare positions, surpassing hiring needs in the tech industry by nearly five percent. Approximately 680,000 jobs in the healthcare field posted last month, an 11 percent increase from open positions available in August 2014. Nursing positions dominate the thriving healthcare field 7 of 10 available healthcare positions seek nurses. As the need for nurses has gr own, so have the various ways that medical practitioners can be certified in the field of nursing. Here are some of the basics Registered Nurses (RNs)RNs are the most in demand 72 percent of positions seeking nurses are looking for RNs. The first step to becoming an RN is to secure either a Bachelors of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN) or an Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN). A BSN is a four-year degree. Many variables impact the cost of earning a BSNwhether you study at a state or private school, what financial aid and scholarship you may qualify for, etc. A BSN establishes a good professional basis for advancement. After taking the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX-RN) and earning its certifications, a BSN qualifies nurses for most entry level positions. The degree enables practitioners to advance to higher positions such as department chiefs or nurse practitioners. Incoming nurses can also get certified as an RN after completing an ADN at a college or university. Thei r term of study is usually 2-3 years. Again, the cost of their certification depends on several factors, but costs run about $20,000-30,000, depending on where they study and how long it takes them to complete their courses. Nursing students do not need a high school diploma to enter ADN programs most schools will accept a GED. ADN students have a very focused study track that emphasizes fundamentals. While BSNs require more coursework, pursuing an ADN is demanding and rigorous. Upon completion of their coursework, students can take the NCLEX-RN and earn their RN upon passing. In order to enjoy the full range of professional advancement, they are encouraged to continue their studies. Available Jobs 337,000Average Salary $66,000Search Registered NursejobsNurse Practitioner (NP) Nurse Practitioners need to have at least a Masters Degree in nursing, and there may be additional certifications that vary by state. Again, it is difficult to estimate the cost associated with Masters-level c ourses because there is a wide range. NPs have the authority to practice independently. They can perform physical exams, diagnose and treat common injuries and illnesses, prescribe medications including controlled substances and interact with patients in a variety of other ways. Approximately 15 percent of nurse practitioners have their own private practice. This is a field that is expected to increase in demand.Available Jobs 18,000Average Salary $91,000Search Nurse Practitioner jobsLicensed Practical Nurse (LPN)An LPN (also called a licensed vocational nurse in some states) provides basic care to patients such as administering medications, charting vital signs, changing wound dressings, giving feedings and performing CPR in emergencies. The specific duties vary by state, but in general, LPNs provide basic care to their patients as instructed by the RN who oversees their work.LPN training takes about 18 months to complete and includes a clinical rotation where students get hands-on experience. At the end of their coursework, students are required to pass the NCLEX-PN to earn their certification. The average cost of LPN certification is $10,000-$15,000 nationally. This figure can vary depending on where students chose to study.Available Jobs 54,000Average Salary $39,000Search Licensed Practical Nurse jobsCertified Nursing Assistants (CNA) CNAs make patients feel comfortable by providing basic care such as bathing, grooming and feeding. They also help patients strengthen their abilities to perform basic functions for themselves such as dressing and eating. Patients often bond with their CNAs because they spend a lot of one-on-one time working with them. Working as a CNA is a fast-paced and rewarding job. It is also a great introduction to the medical field. To qualify, it takes a high school diploma or a GED plus a CNA certificate. CNA candidates take a course to learn the basics in the field. Courses are available online and can take two-to-six weeks to comple te. At the end of the course students are required to take a state skills exam to earn certification. The total cost of the training is about $1,500, but this can change depending on where students choose to study.Available Jobs 52,000Average Salary $27,000Certified Nursing Assistant jobsNursing is a thriving and lucrative field. There are plenty of open positions, and there is ample room for advancement. Forging a trajectory may require additional training, but the job opportunities are plentiful at every level, and all indicators suggest that this trend will only continue. Its a great time to be a nurse.

New study shows everyone prefers to work with men

New study shows everyone prefers to work with menNew study shows everyone prefers to work with menA new MSN poll for Business Insider found that the majority of men and women still prefer the company of men at work. And its not just men supporting their own gender One in five men and women said they would rather work with a male colleague.Perhaps this male confidence also stems from believing in their own success. Most men in the MSN poll believed that the gender gap is an issue of the past. 40% of men surveyed said that women are treated very ritterlichly in the workplace while only 17% of women believed the same. This reinforces a separate study that found58% of U.S. men in the workforce believed that all obstacles to gender equality are gone.Thats what researchers found in studies on confidence in the workplace men are more confident - almost unquestioning- in their abilities and more confident that when things go wrong at work, its their gender, and not their performance, thats to blame. As Ladders has previously reported, male leaders have an advantage and are better liked - across generations.Millennial men believe men make better leadersMultiples studies got the same result men are very confident in their abilities- so confident that they suspect discrimination when they dont get the job. Out of the8,000 millennials aged between 18-34 that Qualtrics and Accel surveyed, 33% of millennial men believed that they had faced frequent gender discrimination at work, compared with the 21% of millennial women who felt the same way. Moreover, millennial men were 50% more likely to believe that their gender welches affecting their career opportunities, although Qualtrics didnt say whether the men believed the effect was positive or negative, meaning whether the men believed they received better or worse opportunities because of their gender.Meanwhile, women were more likely to believe in gender equality at work, with 41% believing that men and women are judged by the same criteria in the workplace. The Qualtrics study also showed vastly different views between young men and women on what makes a good boss or leader. For instance, millennial men are more likely than their female counterparts to believe that men are more effective leaders, with 38% of young men saying that compared to 14% of young women. And, while millennial men and women both mostly had no preference for their bosss gender, they tend to favor strictly gender-limited workplacesTwo-thirds of millennial women and 72% of men prefer to work with people of their own gender, Qualtrics found.Confident that theyre rightResearchers have found that the reason that men feel that gender discrimination may keep them from jobs is that that theyre more openly confident about their abilities. In other words, men are more likely to believe that if they didnt get the job, something was wrong with the process rather than a flaw in their own abilities. One study found that in self-assessments on indivi dualcompetence, men graded themselves higher than women. In fact, theyre so confident in themselves that a 2016 study found that men were more likely to be their own topexpert on any subject. Looking into two decades of data on academic citations, researchers found that men self-cited themselves 70% more than women. Men are, in fact, their own consultants. These beliefs in fairness and confidence are particularly interesting because they dont hold up to reality as measured by a plethora of studies that show women are more likely than men to be discriminated against for their gender in the workplace. The Financial Times surveyed 50 of the worlds largest banks and found that women inthese positions wereless likely to be promoted than men. Only 25.5% of senior bank roles in 2016 were held by women. The workplace isnt a fair battleground for men and women when it comes to wages either. Four studies found that when women negotiated for higher pay, they weremore likely to be penalized for it from both men and women. The people on the other side of the negotiation said they would be less inclined to work with a women who negotiated, more likely to call her a bad fit to the company. The main takeaway from these studies, which show self-image thats contrary to reality, may be that more workplaces should train employees on how to fight their own subconscious biases on men and women in the workplace.

Scout Sniper Training in the Marine Corps

Scout Sniper Training in the kriegsmarine CorpsScout Sniper Training in the Marine CorpsThe Scout Sniper Basic Curse moved from its previous location at 3rd Marine Regiment to MCB Hawaii, Kaneohe Bays Regimental Schools, in order to more efficiently train devil dogs of the 3rd Marine Division. The school will now receive its funding from the base and is also allowing other branches of the Armed Forces to attend the 10-week-long course. The Marine Corps has the best sniper program in the world, said Gunnery Sgt. Richard Tisdale, staff noncommissioned officer in charge of the Scout Sniper School. A sniper needs to be trained as best as possible because they must be combat ready at all times, he explained. Due to the nature of the snipers mission, they must be trained mentally and physically to operate independently forward of friendly positions on the battlefield. The Scout Sniper School has integrated Marines from the entire 3rd Marine Division as well as soldiers from the Armys 25th Infantry Division aboard Schofield Barracks, and Navy Seals from Navy Seal Delivery Team 1 located at Ford Island. Previously, the school only trained Marines with the regiment. We are learning how to properly employ snipers, how to use the weapons, use camouflage and stalking techniques, said Army Spc. Joshua Garrison, a sniper with Headquarters Co., 1st Bn., 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. Soldiers can learn as much as they want from their unit, but to become sniper qualified, they have to attend this school. This school goes further in depth than what units teach about basic marksmanship, weapons, camouflage, and reconnaissance techniques, said Garrison. The course is broken down into three phases. The first involves land navigation and marksmanship. During this phase, trainees fire sniper ammunition on long distance and unknown distance qualification courses. The second phase covers stalking techniques, field skills and call for fire rehearsals. The last encompas ses everything from communication to surveillance performance. When many people think of a sniper, they think of a person who randomly shoots people, said Tisdale. A sniper selects his target and fires upon it. Marksmanship makes up only 10 percent of being a sniper. We train our snipers to be patient and wait for the perfect opportunity to fire upon the target when it will best support the mission, Tisdale continued. They could lay in a dormant position for days at a time before actually pulling the trigger and engaging on the target. Soldiers and other service members are paired up with Marines, so they can cross train one another, and at the same time, keep the Marines on their toes with the competition of training with another branch of the Armed Forces. The Marine sniper course is taught twice a year, and the range can be used for sustained training by any requesting sniper units throughout the rest of the year. I think it is a great experience, said Garrison. You get to see ho w the other services operate, and they get to see how you operate as well.

How to Lead and Leave your Ego at the Door

How to Lead and Leave your Ego at the DoorHow to Lead and Leave your Ego at the DoorHow to Lead and Leave your Ego at the Door Ardi, Ph.D., founder of Corporate Anthropology Advisors and author of The Fall of the Alphas The New Beta Way to Connect, Collaborate, Influence And Lead (St. Martin, 2013)If you ask fruchtwein people to describe how a great leader looks and acts, youll often get answers that refer to generals and military commanders, or presidents and heads of state. In other words, we tend to think of leadersas those who rise to the top of the hierarchical pyramid those who bildschirm charisma, a take charge attitude, and the self-confidence to issue commands from above consequences be damned. While that leadershipmodel may have worked in the past, the world has changed in ways that make such command-and-control models obsolete. I define this change in my book, The Fall of the Alphas. Call it a changing of the guard, if you will, where the Alpha model of leadership is bei ng phased out in favor of the newer Beta model.A New Model of LeadershipThis new model describes leaders who have a greater self-awareness and an understanding of how to limit their ego. Ego is a Latin word that means I myself. An individual who views themselves realistically, and recognizes both their strengths and weaknesses, is generally perceived to have a healthy ego. Those of us who have unhealthy egos, on the other hand, tend to preserve their self-judgments and close themselves off to the opinions of others. And yet, it is this sense of inflated self-worth that we seem to reward when it comes to leadership. It would be considered weak and indecisive to weigh the consideration of others in favor of what those at the top of the pyramid have decided. In our outdated Alpha view of the world, weve decided that the best leaders are those with the greatest self-confidence and biggest egos who garner the most influence. To survive and thrive today and into the future, though, business l eaders need the appropriate self-awareness to manage their egos. Beta leaders need to be fully invested in the present, rather than viewing situations and individuals through the lens of the self or focusing on future moves on the corporate chessboard.Leading with a Healthy Ego Now dont get me wrong to be a successful entrepreneur, you need a healthy ego to succeed. The difference is that a Beta leader understands that the success of the organization doesnt rest solely on his or her shoulders. Rather, Beta leaders are self-aware. They understand the limitations of their ego. Thats also why Beta leaders have a desire to include others in the most critical decisions and share in the rewards for work well done. For instance, an Alpha CEO might parade around the schreibstube asking workers if they are hitting their numbers, while issuing a none-too-subtle threat if they arent. Beta leaders, on the other hand, ask,What can I do to help you hit your numbers? What are the constraints and how can I remove them?Is there someone who can help and, if so, how can I connect you with them?Imagine how the workers in these two organizations might respond differently?Healthy Leadership Builds Strong TeamsBeta leaders must also consider why they respond the way they do. For instance, lets say a suggestion comes in from another member of the organization. A Beta leader asks herselfDo I have a bias or a personal issue that might color or slant my judgment?Am I truly thinking about this suggestion from a place of wisdom and experience?Have I truly thought through the possible unintended consequences that might result from my decisions and actions? When leaders embrace this level of introspection, they are, in fact, far from being indecisive. Rather, they are fostering deep respect for divergent points of view a trait that todays workers cherish in their leaders.Armed with a managed ego, the very best Beta leaders intuitively understand how to play to their strengths and build the ve ry best team possible around them. Self-aware Beta leaders, for example, recognize the gaps in their own skill sets and are confident enough to hire intellectual equals capable of filling those holes. What Defines a Beta LeaderA core trait of a Beta leader is the capacity to relinquish the need to control everything and instead bring in new people who reflect the company cultureand who can augment the leaders own skill set.Other traitsthat youll rarely find in their Alpha counterparts thatBeta leaders demonstrateAre good listeners and communicators.Willing to bet on people by allow them to take risks rather than risking the company on their own bets.Willing to create partnerships within and from outside the organization.Share the rewards of the organizations success beyond the corner office.Actively solicit feedback from their peers and coworkers because they see that as an opportunity to improve themselves.Willing to admit mistakes and ask for help in avoiding repeating them.A Bette r Way to LeadThe best way for leaders to prevent narcissism and ego from impeding their success is to be as aware as possible of their own motives and feelings, and needs and wants of others. To borrow a term from Buddhism, Beta leaders need to practice mindfulness and encourage their peers and employees to do the same.If leaders can pay attention to the humanity of others and show that they actually care, they will yield immeasurable benefits for both themselves and their organization. Thats what being a Beta leader is all about.Author BioDana Ardi, Ph.D. is the founder of Corporate Anthropology Advisors and author of The Fall of the Alphas The New Beta Way to Connect, Collaborate, Influence And Lead.Dr. Ardi has served as a Partner/Managing Director at CCMP Capital and JPMorgan Partners and welches a Partner at Flatiron Partners. Earlier in her career, she was an operating executive at R. R. Donnelly Sons and at McGraw-Hill.She also has a background managing and leading executiv e search firms.Dr. Ardi has a bachelors degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a masters degree and doctorate in education from Boston College.

Surviving Office Politics

Surviving Office Politics Government Shutdowns. Higher Taxes. Healthcare. Left versus Right. If there is a single one of us out there who hasnt had enough politics for a lifetime, Id pay to meet them Over the last several years we have been inundated by increasingly polarized (andfrustrating) politics. The last thing we need is to find ourselves running for office in an internal election at the workplace. Thank goodness theres no such thing as politics in the officecause you knowthat would be rough. But just in case, here are some steps to avoiding an embarrassing political scandal1. AAR Avoiding Angry RecruitersHey there, do me a favor would you? Id like you to work a client for me. Theyll have changing budgets, ridiculous hiring procedures, and tight budget guidelines. Then Id like you to field calls from candidates who make clear how little they like or respect recruiters. Make a placement. Huz zah.. Hear from some more candidates who hate all, I repeat, all recruiters. Receive a voicemail from the original client asking why you havent found their purple squirrel yet (sigh).Recruiters have a tough job, and when you boil it down, the greatest challenge is the fact that it is utterly up and down. We get great news alongside bad news. We place people the same day we have to fire people. So, when office politics and new management come into play, it presents a perfect opportunity to vent. And last time I checked, a venting recruiter wasnt a great source of professional advice.2. Think Before you SpeakAnd then, think again. When politics, office policies or leadership changes occur, the folks on the ground floor like to huddle up and discuss said changes. They theorize. They contemplate. They complain. And dont get me wrongit can be a great source of information, either company wise or just a little perspective. But if youre tempted to take part, dont. Getting involved in the t heorizing or the people and process bashing is a fast way to find yourself under a microscope. Play it cool, listen to some of the rumors (they can be informative and fun) but keep your thoughts to yourself and give change a chance before you buy into the talk.3. Money TalksLove it or hate it, we are in a focused, high pressure results driven business. And for thoseof us who have been around a few years, process, politics and procedures have come and gone. What sticks at the end of the day is your success rate. Are you closing business? Are you driving revenue in the door? Are you furthering both your own and your company goals? If so, you have nothing to worry about. Performance is the driving metric in theworld of recruiting. So when youre worried about office politics, put your head down and do your job.

8 executives share the best advice they received from mom

8 executives share the best advice they received from mom8 executives share the best advice they received from momShe bought the first brew from your lemonade stand. Read - and re-read - every last paper or project you were worried about. She helped you pack up for college, and well, choose a university. She edited your first resume. Framed your successes - and then bragged about them to anyone who would listen. She came to your games and your graduations and was tzu sichbeie to pick up the pieces of every disappointment, no matter how significant. As your greatest fan, your cheerleader and the woman who inspired you to chase after those lofty dreams, certifications, degrees and gigs, the impact of an ever-encouraging mom extends well into adulthood. Even if your mom doesnt work in the same industry you selected for yourself, zu sich smart - and carefully-selected - words make a difference in your professional decisions and progression. Especially for these executives, having the ir mother in their corner ensured their success and amped their confidence.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.In honor of Mothers Day, they express their sentimentsYou can always reinvent yourself.Though Charlie Javice, the founder of FRANK, finds a shift in perspective scary like anyone else, it was her mom who taught her the importance of reinvention. And maybe mora importantly, not to fear the tides.Growing up, I remember watching as she changed careers and attained degrees through her tenacity, grit, and perseverance. It instilled a fearless persistence in me and I wouldnt have the confidence I needed to succeed if I didnt have that foundational training. Her biggest piece of direct advice to me was that no can really mean yes - if you ask enough times. And wouldnt you know it, the saying here is true mother is always right, she shared. You have to always go for it.Founder o f RAMONA and Bellus Wines, as well as director of Wine Special Projects for Momofuku, Jordan Salcito says her mom had a knack for watching out for brilliance in her daughters. Any type of passion was noted, and Salcito landed her first freelance writing gig after her mom encouraged her to type up writing samples and deliver copies in hand-addressed envelopes to editors in Denver, Colorado. It was this habit of perseverance that Salcito says primed her - and her sisters - to not only identify their dreams but go after them with tenacity. This approach to life has been incredibly empowering. Of course, there are always circumstances outside of our control, but having a mindset of focus and persistence has been invaluable as a founder of a company. My main job is to constantly problem solve, pivot when something isnt working, and persevere through any hiccups, she shares.Jobs are a two-way decision. No matter how high you raise in your career, theres still something heart-fluttering ab out receiving a job offer for an opportunity youre psyched about. But as the chief marketing officer of Evernote Andrew Malcolms mom reminds, jobs are a two-way street - and decision. Thats why she always told him not to be honored by an invitation to take a new gig, and remember its still up to you if you want to work there.I tend to believe that much of your career is luck and the seemingly high correlation of luck and cool job titles supports this belief. My moms advice made me aware of this fact and gave me the confidence to turn down jobs that were undoubtedly cool, just not for me, he explained. Embracing that idea allowed me to choose companies and projects that fit with my passions and where my skills could make a real impact. It also helped me remember my value/worth and what I bring to the table - this is something I try and will continue to instill in my kids in everything they do from activities/hobbies to school work.Face your fears- no matter how big or small.Regardl ess if youre anxious about speaking at your first conference, giving feedback for an employee at a performance review or about putting in your two-week notice, fear has a way of standing in between where you want to be and where you are. Chris Terrill, CEO of ANGI Home Services, the parent company of digital home service brands, including HomeAdvisor and Angies List says his mom stressed the importance of diving in, no matter how scared he was to take that step.Be it going for a position you arent sure youre ready for, public speaking or trying something new you will invariably fail at until you get better - fear is crippling and can hold back even the brightest people. If a young, single mother raising two children can graduate Phi Kappa and get her masters degree in social work, we can all push past our comfort zone to do more than we imagined possible, he brags. You choose your career every single day.Though relationships and jobs are two different beasts, for the Group Presiden t of Prepared Foods for Tyson Foods, Sally Grimes, their mantras have strikingly relatable benefits. Because her mom came from another generation and another culture, she was part of an arranged marriage, and shed insight on how to make love and marriage work to her daughter. While not intended to become career advice, the idea of choosing something over and over again has paved the path for Sallys career. She told me that love is something you work at - and to never to confuse the feelings of romance with actual love. She also advised that love is something you choose every day, even when you arent feeling it. Ive actually applied this to my career. Time after time Ive rejected the romance of jobs or industries that were sexy or popular in the moment, in favor of substantive challenges like the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the worlds food system. And on the days when I am not feeling it, I just work at it, she explains. You have to work really hard.Growing up, cofo under of Betches Media, Aleen Kuperman watched her mom - a Jewish-Russian immigrant - build a successful OB/GYN practice, without any money or knowledge of the English language. It was a long journey, but one that gave Kuperman a glimpse into whats required for success grit.Through watching my mother get through medical school while I was only a few years old and observing her work ethic as she got further and further in her career, I have learned that you have to work extremely hard to get to where you want to be. This is something I have applied throughout the process of cofounding and growing a business Im passionate about, she shared. And since her mom did it with her own two hands - and stubborn ethic - Kuperman followed in her footsteps, and decided not to rely on financial support from anyone but herself. This makes the excelling media company the complete self-funded product of Kuperman and her fellow female founders.Find a career you love. Its the same words of wisdom wev e all heard over and over again, but it doesnt make them less true doing something day-in and day-out that you adore will make you happier- and more successful. The cofounder of MVMT, a watch and sunglass company, Jake Kassan says his mom encouraged him to follow his passion, no matter how ludicrous it might have sounded at the start. She supported my decision to be an entrepreneur, to drop out of college and pursue my crazy ventures was everything to me. I needed that support to get to where Im at today. I have some friends whose parents fight with them and discourage them from their dreams. Im lucky to have my mom, he shared.Treat others how you want to be treated. As one of the golden rules we learn as children, respecting other people extends far past the playground and into every facet of our life - careers included. For cofounder and CEO of Minibar Delivery, Lara Crystal, prioritizing kindness has been at the forefront of her success, all thanks to the words of wisdom from her mom.In todays connected age, this advice is more powerful than ever. Your reputation and how you treat others is ultimately what people remember and your greatest legacy, she says.

New Eyes, New Rules for Your Resume

How To Get A Job With An Advanced Degree But Little Experience

How To Get A Job With An Advanced Degree But Little ExperienceHow To Get A Job With An Advanced Degree But Little ExperienceI took little time off after earning my bachelors degree and continued my course of study in English literature. Graduate school was a great experience for me. In addition to my coursework I was a teaching assistant, served on an educational committee, wrote a thesis and presented a paper at an academic conference. By the time I graduated I felt prepared for the job market, and I was eager to see where my career path would take me next. Only, next took me a long time to reach, and when I got there it was notlage what I was expecting. It took me over a year to find a job in my field. I made it to the final round of four interviews, but I didnt get any of those jobs. The other candidates had more professional experience. I finally got a part-time grant writing position at a non-profit organization. Luckily, it quickly became a full-time gig, and it gave me the prof essional experience I so desperately needed. Im sure other grads find themselves in this position, with a lopsided resume that includes impressive educational achievements but little professional experience. If you are stuck in that rut, hang in there. Finding a good job is doable. And there are advantages to having an advanced degree early in your career. Have Realistic ExpectationsA graduate degree can lead to a better job and greater earning potential, but that may take time. Many professionals go to graduate school as they advance in their careers, which is beneficial because many employers offer tuition assistance, and employees can be purposeful in orchestrating their academic work around their professional needs. Although it made it difficult for me to get my foot in the door, doing my graduate work was good for me. I had time to dedicate to the project. As a result I was able to fully engage and get some valuable professional experiences, such as teaching. Although it didnt have the weight I was hoping it would when I hit the job market, it made me a more astute professional in ways that continue to benefit me. I will always consider it among my most valued professional experiences. Doing your graduate work upfront may not get the return on your investment until your professional experience catches up to your academic experience. Do Your TimeI mistakenly believed that my experience as a teaching assistant would be viewed as professional experience. I didnt earn educational credentials, and I wasnt applying for teaching jobs. So it was regarded positively, but it wasnt viewed as professional experience. I was basically a well-decorated, entry-level candidate. I needed a touchstone job to bridge the gap between the academic world and the professional world. University life is not like professional life. When you leave the university you take your distribution policy in a new reality that has a different structure and operates from a different set a value s. So you have to do your time there, too. Reaping the Rewards Once your professional work catches up to your academic work, it pays off. I found myself quickly advancing once I had acclimated to the professional world. I have been so impressed with my colleagues who balance graduate school with full-time employment. I am also very thankful that I had already completed this work. I use what I learned in graduate school every day of my professional life. Grad school refined my research and writing skills. It taught me how to conduct classes and interact with students, professors and other professionals. It taught me to advocate for myself. I will always be deeply thankful for the experience. If you are in the same boat as I was, hang in there and look for that touchstone job that will help you get started. It may not be what you were expecting, but make it work and it can lead you to better things.
